GAY PEOPLE'S CHRONICLE 1993 PRIDE GUIDE 17:
Cinematheque is showing gay and lesbian films
It's not too hard during the year to catch a film that appeals to a gay or lesbian audience at the Cleveland Cinematheque. And, to celebrate Pride, the theater has scheduled a collection of eight "New Gay and Lesbian Films" during May and June. Coming up in the next two weeks are:
Swoon
May 29 at 9:30 pm
In this strikingly photographed independent film, Tom Kalin reassesses the notorious 1924 Leopold and Loeb murder case in terms of contemporary sexual politics. The two brilliant and privileged Chicago teenagers who shocked America with the kidnap and murder of a schoolboy are recast as gay outsiders victimized by a homophobic society. Cleveland premiere.
The Hours and Times May 30 at 7 pm
Did Beatles manager Brian Epstein have sexual designs on John Lennon? So posits independent filmmaker Christopher Munch in this assured, well-acted, highly acclaimed piece of speculative fiction. Preceded by Flames of Passion, voted Best Short Film at the 1990 San Francisco Lesbian and Gay Film Festival.
Beware of a Holy Whore
June 3 at 7:30 pm
June 5 at 9:10 pm
The late Rainer Werner Fassbinder's favorite of all his films-out of U.S. release for years-is the first feature to be fully restored and re-released by the Fassbinder Foundation. Set at a seaside hotel in Spain, this is the story of a stalled movie unit whose crew members turn on each other verbally, emotionally and sexually while
waiting to resume work. The great cast includes Lou Castel, Hanna Schygulla, Eddie Constantine, Ulli Lommel and Fassbinder himself.
Satan's Brew June 3 at 9:30 pm June 4 at 7:30 pm
Grotesques and perverts populate Rainer Werner Fassbinder's absurd, dark, kinky comedy that has been out of U.S. distribution for years. In it, a recently reticent revolutionary poet takes to plagiarizing (and eventually personifying) German symbolist poet Stefan George, dabbling in murder and homosexuality in the process. With Kurt Raab, Margit Carstensen, Volker Spengler and Ingrid Caven.

Chantal Akerman herself stars in her sexually frank first film, a meditation on herself and others. Beginning with solitary pursuits in her own apartment, Akerman's character moves next to a sexual encounter with a male truck driver and then to a tryst with her former, female lover. Adults only, Cleveland premiere.
Together Alone
June 11 at 7:40 and 9:20 pm June 12 at 7:20 and 9:10 pm
March's major blizzard prevented many from catching the Cinematheque's show-
ing of P.J. Castellaneta's acclaimed new comedy-drama that was named "Best Film" at both the San Francisco and Los Angeles gay and lesbian film festivals. This lowbudget, independently produced movie focuses on two men-one gay, one bisexual-who have had sex after meeting at a bar. The two spend the rest of the night talking frankly about shared concernsintimacy, loneliness, one-night stands, relationships, trust and AIDS-and their revelations are funny, touching and surprising. Adults only.
The Cleveland Cinematheque is located at the Cleveland Institute of Art, 11141 East Blvd in University Circle. There's free parking behind the building. Each film is $5; you can see two films a night for $9. The box office number is 421-7450. ♡
